On the Road (and More)

The Country Gentlemen

The Country Gentlemen’s On the Road was issued by Folkways in November 1963 as FA 2411, drawn from two live concerts. Side one comes from Antioch College in Yellow Springs, Ohio, on 13 April 1962; side two from a concert at Sacred Mushroom in Columbus, Ohio, on 6 January 1963. Charlie Waller plays guitar, John Duffey mandolin, Eddie Adcock banjo and Tom Gray bass, and Discogs credits all four with vocals. The tracks include “Handsome Molly,” “Poor Ellen Smith,” “The Long Black Veil,” “Walking in Jerusalem,” “I Am a Pilgrim” and the instrumentals “Grandfather’s Clock,” “Heartaches” and “Rawhide.”

Smithsonian Folkways reissued it on CD in 2001 as On the Road (and More), adding six tracks recorded at Carnegie Hall on 16 September 1961 and credited as the “Hootenanny Recordings.” Wikipedia notes that Kenny Haddock’s dobro is heard on the Carnegie Hall cuts.
