“Fox on the Run” was written by the English songwriter Tony Hazzard and first recorded in late 1968 by Manfred Mann; the single reached No. 5 on the UK chart in early 1969 and is the source of the lyric and basic chord shape every bluegrass version inherits. Hazzard’s catalogue includes several other songs that became Manfred Mann hits, but “Fox on the Run” is the one with the longest second life across genres.
The bluegrass life of the song begins when banjoist Bill Emerson heard the Manfred Mann recording on the radio and started performing it with his duo Emerson and Waldron. Emerson then brought it to the Country Gentlemen, who cut it on the 1971 album Sound Off in February of that year. The Country Gentlemen reading — with Charlie Waller’s lead, Doyle Lawson’s tenor, and Emerson’s banjo break — turned the song into one of the most-requested bluegrass pieces of the early 1970s.
The lyric is a heartbreak-recast-as-fox-hunt conceit — the woman of the title gone like a fox the hunter cannot catch — with verses that have travelled freely between covers. Tom T. Hall, Bill Monroe, and dozens of festival bands have recorded the song since the 1970s, and the chorus is one of the most recognised in modern bluegrass.
