Double Banjo Bluegrass Spectacular (Rounder 11661 0548 2, circa 2007) is built around the spectacle of two banjos in a single ensemble — Tony Trischka, one of the instrument's most innovative voices, paired with Tom Adams on second banjo. David McLaughlin on mandolin, Dudley Connell on guitar and vocals, Lou Reid, Ron Stewart on fiddle, Marshall Wilborn on bass, and Maggie Stephens complete a session with strong traditional-bluegrass credentials. The combination of Trischka's boundary-pushing approach and sidemen whose roots are firmly in the classic tradition creates a productive tension — music formally grounded in Monroe-style bluegrass but shaped by a musician who has never been content merely to reproduce it. The album is characteristically Trischka: engaged with the genre's history while alert to possibilities that extend well beyond inherited form.
