Old-Time (Traditional) Classic Country

Tony Trischka is one of the most influential five-string banjoists of the past half-century, a chromatic-style innovator whose playing, teaching, and bandleading have shaped the post-Scruggs progressive banjo tradition that runs through Béla Fleck, Noam Pikelny, and beyond.

  • Born Anthony Cattell Trischka on January 16, 1949 in Syracuse, New York; picked up the banjo as a teenager after hearing the Kingston Trio's "Charlie and the M.T.A."
  • Made his recording debut with Country Cooking on Rounder in 1971 (14 Bluegrass Instrumentals), then co-founded Breakfast Special in 1973 and Skyline in the early 1980s — both pioneering progressive-bluegrass ensembles.
  • Released a long string of innovative banjo albums on Rounder including Bluegrass Light (1974), Heartlands (1975), Banjoland (1977), A Robot Plane Flies Over Arkansas (1983), and World Turning (1995).
  • Mentored a generation of banjo players, most famously Béla Fleck, who studied with him in the 1970s.
  • Won the IBMA Banjo Player of the Year award in 2007; his 2007 album Double Banjo Bluegrass Spectacular (with guests Steve Martin, Earl Scruggs, Béla Fleck, and Tony Rice) was a Grammy nominee and won IBMA Recorded Event of the Year and Instrumental Album of the Year.
  • Named a United States Artists Friends Fellow in 2012; produced Steve Martin's Grammy-nominated Rare Bird Alert (2011) and was musical director of the PBS documentary Give Me the Banjo (2011).
  • Released Earl Jam (2024) and Earl Jam 2 (2026), built from previously unreleased Earl Scruggs / John Hartford private recordings; Earl Jam was a Grammy nominee for Best Bluegrass Album at the 67th Grammys.
  • Launched his ArtistWorks online banjo school in 2009 and has authored more than fifteen instructional books.
