Banjoland (Rounder 0087, 1977) was recorded in two places with two different casts. Side one was made at Starday Studios in Nashville. Tony Trischka and Bill Keith play banjo, Tony Rice guitar, Buck White and David Grisman mandolin, Vassar Clements fiddle, Todd Phillips bass and Jerry Douglas dobro on most of it, and Andy Statman adds mandolin on “Follow the Leader” and “Foggy Mountain Breakdown.” The side opens with a one-minute “Yankee Doodle” credited to the banjoist Vess Ossman, then runs through “Salt Creek,” Don Reno’s “Follow the Leader,” “Don’t Let Your Deal Go Down,” “Foggy Mountain Breakdown” and the Reno–Lunsford “Dixie Breakdown.” On “Don’t Let Your Deal Go Down,” Béla Fleck joins as a third banjo and Rice sings lead.
Side two was recorded at Pyramid Sound in Ithaca, New York, and consists of Trischka’s own compositions: “You Won’t Know Til You Find Out,” “Metal Roses and the Jewel in the Lotus,” “Smashing the Atom,” “Soddy Daisy,” “Patchwork / Kingston Spring” and “Song for Aurora.” Mark Hoffman plays guitar on most of them and Andy Statman mandolin on three; Kenny Kosek plays fiddle, John Dancks bass and Stacy Phillips dobro on several, while “Soddy Daisy” features Russ Barenberg on guitar, Howie Tarnower on mandolin and Evan Stover on fiddle. The first track on the side is an electric-band piece with Hoffman and Danny Weiss on electric guitar, and Hoffman sings “Song for Aurora.” Trischka produced.
