Trischka, who first gained attention in the early 1970s with Country Cooking and went on to become one of the instrument's most restlessly inventive practitioners, here turns toward celebration rather than deconstruction. 'Brown's Ferry Blues,' the Depression-era hokum song recorded by the Delmore Brothers, appears alongside the railroad ballad 'Casey Jones,' choices that root the project in the American song tradition Scruggs himself drew from. Earl Jam is a musician's reckoning with the figure who made his own music conceivable, executed with the technical command Trischka has earned over decades.
