Tall Grass (Bridges Records BG 2701-498) is a studio album from an ensemble of traditional bluegrass performers presenting the acoustic string band repertoire in the direct format that characterized the regional independent recording scene during the decades when the festival circuit created a market for traditional acts working outside the commercial mainstream. Chuck Nation plays guitar and sings; Garland Shuping plays mandolin and sings; Lonnie Peerce plays fiddle; Steve Maxwell plays banjo; and Dave Cosson holds the bass. Peerce — whose fiddle work connected him to multiple traditional ensembles in the Southeastern bluegrass circuit — gives the recording the instrumental anchor that the direct traditional style requires, and the ensemble's commitment to the acoustic format and traditional repertoire reflects the values of the regional performing community they inhabited.
