The Country Gentlemen's The Award-Winning Country Gentlemen, released on Rebel Records (SLP-1506) in 1972, won the Muleskinner News Album of the Year award and launched what is regarded as the band's second great era. Charlie Waller plays guitar and sings; Bill Emerson, banjo; Doyle Lawson, mandolin and vocals; Bill Yates, bass; and Mike Auldridge, dobro—Auldridge then still building the reputation that would make him the instrument's defining voice in bluegrass. Note: catalog personnel also lists John Duffey, Eddie Adcock, and Ed Ferris; these were members of the 1960s founding era and do not appear on this 1972 recording. The album's repertoire—Gordon Lightfoot, Bob Dylan, Carter Stanley—exemplifies the band's eclectic, forward-looking approach.
