Blowin’ in the Wind

The Country Gentlemen

Album · 1966 · London (Japan) SLH 52

The Country Gentlemen’s bluegrass version of Bob Dylan’s “Blowin’ in the Wind” opens an LP that the Bluegrass Discography lists as Folk Hits / Bluegrass Style, a Japanese pressing on London (SLH 52) dated 1966. All fourteen tracks were recorded on 15 November 1965 at Wynwood Studios in Falls Church, Virginia, by Charlie Waller on guitar, John Duffey on mandolin, Eddie Adcock on banjo and Ed Ferris on bass.

The program is folk-revival material and older favorites. Alongside the Dylan song are “Five Hundred Miles,” Woody Guthrie’s “This Land Is Your Land,” “Take This Hammer,” “Red River Valley,” “Rose Connelly” and “Goodbye Katie.” Five tracks are instrumentals: “Home Sweet Home,” “Oh, Susanna,” “Camptown Races,” “My Old Kentucky Home” and “Old Lang Syne.” Waller sings lead on “Blowin’ in the Wind” with Duffey and Adcock on the harmony parts, while Duffey takes the lead on “Five Hundred Miles.”

The same session was later collected on High Lonesome: The Complete Starday Recordings (Starday, 1998), which lists all fourteen titles.
