Classic Country Gents Reunion

The Country Gentlemen

Album · 1989 · Sugar Hill SH 3772

Classic Country Gents Reunion (Sugar Hill SH 3772) was released in 1989. It reunited the Country Gentlemen lineup that played together from 1960 to 1964: Charlie Waller on guitar, John Duffey on mandolin, Eddie Adcock on banjo and Tom Gray on bass. Gray had joined in September 1960 and left in 1964; Duffey left in 1969 and Adcock in 1970. The sessions took place in 1988 at Masterworks in Fairfax, Virginia, and the album was produced by Adcock and Penny Parsons, who also wrote the liner notes. Mike Auldridge plays dobro on three tracks, “Stewball,” “Here Today and Gone Tomorrow” and “Casey’s Last Ride.”

The songs come from a range of writers: Bob Dylan’s “Fare Thee Well,” Townes Van Zandt’s “I’ll Be Here in the Morning,” Kris Kristofferson’s “Casey’s Last Ride” and Carter Stanley’s “Say Won’t You Be Mine.” Adcock wrote the instrumental “Champagne Breakdown.” Waller sings lead on “Fare Thee Well” and others, with Duffey on tenor and Adcock on baritone; Duffey takes the lead on “I’ll Be Here in the Morning,” “Wild Side of Life” and “Say Won’t You Be Mine,” and Gray sings the bass part on “Wait a Little Longer.”
