Sing and Play Folk Songs and Bluegrass

The Country Gentlemen

Album · 1961 · Folkways YW 7008 FW

Sing and Play Folk Songs and Bluegrass, the 1991 Country Gentlemen release, draws from the group's long history of bridging bluegrass with folk revival repertoire. The Country Gentlemen, founded in 1957, were among the first bluegrass acts to take the folk-club circuit seriously, and their willingness to incorporate material from outside the traditional canon helped define what would later be called progressive bluegrass. Behind These Prison Walls of Love and Red Rocking Chair, the tracked selections, reflect different aspects of the group's range. By 1991 the lineup had changed considerably from the classic era, but the institutional identity of the group remained associated with the eclectic, cosmopolitan approach that Charlie Waller and John Duffey had established in the band's Washington D.C. years.
