Sit Down Young Stranger, the Country Gentlemen's 1980 release on Sugar Hill (SH-3712), is among the earliest entries in the relationship between Charlie Waller's late-period Country Gentlemen and Barry Poss's new Durham label, which would become the band's home for most of the 1980s. The lineup of the moment surrounds Waller's familiar warm lead and steady rhythm guitar with the next generation of progressive players, the band's repertoire still mixing the contemporary folk-leaning material the Gentlemen had pioneered with traditional bluegrass and gospel selections. The album catches the band at a confident stretch — Waller had been leading the Gentlemen for over twenty years by this point, and the working version of the band had locked into its post-classic identity.
