The Country Gentlemen's Calling My Children Home, originally released on Rebel Records (1574) in 1978—reissued on Gusto (GT-0067)—is widely regarded as one of the great bluegrass gospel albums. Charlie Waller plays guitar and sings; Doyle Lawson, mandolin and vocals; James Bailey, banjo; Spider Gilliam, upright bass; with Bill Yates contributing bass vocals. The title track was co-written by Lawson, Waller, and Yates. Several tracks feature stunning a cappella quartet arrangements that showcase the ensemble's exceptional vocal chemistry. Recorded at Track Recorders in Silver Spring, Maryland in 1977, the album arrived near the peak of the Waller-Lawson era, before Lawson's 1979 departure to found Doyle Lawson & Quicksilver.
