“Teach Your Children” was written by Graham Nash. He began it in 1968 during his last weeks with the British group the Hollies, and it was recorded by Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young for their 1970 album “Deja Vu.”
The song speaks across the generations in both directions: it urges parents to teach their children well and children to do the same for their parents, asking each to be patient with the other’s fears. Its gentle plea for understanding made it an anthem of its era.
Stephen Stills gave the recording a country lilt, and Jerry Garcia added the pedal steel guitar, drawing the song toward the country and bluegrass world.
