The Country Gentlemen's Bluegrass at Carnegie Hall, released on Starday Records (SLP-174) in 1962, is a studio album—despite the title—compiling Washington, D.C. sessions recorded between 1958 and 1961. Charlie Waller plays guitar and sings; John Duffey, mandolin and vocals; Pete Kuykendall, banjo; and Tom Gray, upright bass, across a rotating early lineup that also included Eddie Adcock (banjo) on later sessions. The title references the band's September 1961 Carnegie Hall appearance—among the earliest bluegrass concerts at the venue—which prompted Starday to compile these Washington recordings. The album is among the most important early documents of the progressive, urban-facing bluegrass sound that the Country Gentlemen, founded in Washington, D.C. in 1957, brought to the folk revival era.
