Going Back to the Blue Ridge Mountains (Folkways FTS 31031) was issued in 1973 as the fourth volume of the Country Gentlemen’s Folkways series. All sixteen tracks were recorded live on 1 November 1964 at the Folk Gallery Club in Syracuse, New York, by Charlie Waller on guitar, John Duffey on mandolin, Eddie Adcock on banjo and Ed Ferris on bass. A later Smithsonian Folkways CD reissue credited Tom Gray on bass, an error that Bluegrass Today noted in 2007.

Waller sings lead on most of the songs, with Duffey on tenor and Adcock on baritone: the Delmore Brothers’ title song, Merle Travis’s “Dark as a Dungeon,” Scott Wiseman’s “Brown Mountain Light” and “Copper Kettle,” in an arrangement credited to Waller and Duffey. Duffey takes the lead on Carter Stanley’s “Going to the Races,” Hank Williams’s “I Saw the Light,” “Mary Dear” and “Mule Skinner Blues.” Three tracks are instrumentals: Adcock and Duffey’s “Azzuro Campana (Blue Bells),” “Billy in the Low Ground” and Bill Napier’s “Daybreak in Dixie.”
