Patti Page recorded "The Tennessee Waltz" for Mercury Records in 1950, and the result became one of the most commercially successful singles in the history of American popular music. Page — born Clara Ann Fowler in Claremore, Oklahoma, in 1927 — had been recording for Mercury since 1947 and had developed a following through her radio work and a series of moderately successful releases. "The Tennessee Waltz" was not initially conceived as a centerpiece for her career: Pee Wee King and Redd Stewart had written the song in 1946, and Cowboy Copas had recorded a version that achieved country success before Page's pop-oriented recording transformed its reach entirely.
Mercury's production of Page's version featured an innovation that drew wide attention: Page's voice was overdubbed against itself, creating the effect of two voices singing in harmony without a second vocalist. This technique, while not entirely new, was deployed here with a commercial effectiveness that attracted notice throughout the industry. The record spent thirteen weeks at the top of the pop charts and crossed simultaneously into country markets, reaching listeners who had no prior connection to the waltz's origins in Nashville's publishing community.
The flip side, "Boogie Woogie Santa Claus," demonstrated the range Mercury expected from its artists — a novelty seasonal number paired with a record that would prove to have permanent cultural resonance. Page continued recording for Mercury through the decade, notching additional hits, but "The Tennessee Waltz" remained her signature recording and one of the best-selling singles of the postwar era. Its success accelerated the Nashville publishing industry's interest in reaching pop audiences and helped establish the country-pop crossover as a commercially viable pursuit.
