Solid Ground cover

Solid Ground, released by Atlantic Records on November 7, 1995, was Ricky Skaggs's first album for the label after more than a decade at Epic — the move that signaled the late stage of his major-label country career. Skaggs produced the project himself with assistance from Brian Ahern, balancing the traditional country he had been known for with more contemporary material aimed at radio. A bluegrass-rooted reading of Bill Monroe's Cry, Cry Darlin' with Vince Gill and Alison Krauss on harmony nodded back to Skaggs's roots. The album's three singles failed to break the country Top 40, suggesting the limits of his neotraditionalist run on country radio; within a few years Skaggs would refocus on the bluegrass-only material that defined his late career.
