Somewhere Between, released in 1982 on Rounder (0153), is J.D. Crowe and the New South's deliberate country-leaning crossover album, conceived by Crowe as a calling card to land Keith Whitley a Nashville country deal. Whitley sings lead and plays rhythm guitar; Crowe plays banjo and rhythm guitar; Wendy Miller plays mandolin, Bobby Slone fiddle, and Doug Jernigan steel and Dobro, with the Jordanaires on harmony. The honky-tonk balladry is built on a bluegrass underpinning, recorded at Bull Run Studios in Nashville. The strategy worked — RCA signed Whitley shortly after — and the album was later reissued in 2000 as Sad Songs and Waltzes under Whitley's name. The catalog date of 2026 reflects a data error rather than the original 1982 release.
