"Somewhere South of Crazy," released in October 2011 on Compass Records (7 4564-2), is Dale Ann Bradley's third album for the label, produced by Alison Brown. The band features David Long (banjo), Matt Combs (fiddle), Mike Bub (bass), Mike Sumner (mandolin), and Steve Gulley (guitar, vocals), with additional appearances by Stuart Duncan and Sierra Hull. The title track was co-written with Pam Tillis, who also sings harmony. Brown's production gave the album a polished, contemporary-bluegrass feel while Bradley's original songwriting — including autobiographical tracks "Round and Round" and "Leaving Kentucky" — added emotional depth. Critics called it her most mature and confident work to that point, and the record set the stage for her first Grammy nomination four years later.
