Special Consensus

Album · 1979 · Tin Ear TE 33002

Special Consensus (Tin Ear TE 33002) is a studio album from Special Consensus, the Chicago-based traditional bluegrass ensemble that Greg Cahill built into one of the most consistently active bands in the Midwest acoustic scene after founding the group in 1975. Cahill plays banjo and sings; Andy Dye plays guitar and sings; Ed Walsh plays guitar and mandolin; and Larry Gillis holds the bass. Special Consensus brought the full Kentucky-rooted bluegrass tradition to audiences across the northern United States and Canada, performing with the technical seriousness and ensemble commitment that the style demands while maintaining the regional character of a band formed far from the Appalachian heartland. The album documents the ensemble in a direct traditional format on their own Tin Ear label, presenting the program of traditional and original bluegrass material that sustained their long regional career.
