Stranded in the Moonlight (Flying Fish Records FF 304) is a studio album from Tony Trischka, the Syracuse, New York banjoist whose post-Scruggs experimental approach helped define the direction of progressive bluegrass banjo through his work with Country Cooking and his solo recordings, presenting his ensemble work in the Flying Fish format that suited his cross-genre ambitions. Trischka plays banjo; Barry Mitterhoff plays mandolin; Danny Weiss plays guitar; Dede Wyland sings; and Larry Cohen holds the bass. Flying Fish Records, the Chicago folk-independent label, provided the context for Trischka's more experimental recordings during a period when his technical innovations on the five-string were reshaping expectations for what the instrument could do while retaining a recognizable connection to the bluegrass tradition from which he had emerged.
