The Late Great Townes Van Zandt (Poppy Records, 1972) is the third studio album from the Houston-born songwriter whose influence on Americana and folk music would only deepen in the decades following his 1997 death. The album includes "Pancho and Lefty" — later recorded by Emmylou Harris and then taken to number one on the country charts by Waylon Jennings and Willie Nelson — and "If I Needed You," which Harris and Don Williams also carried to the top of the country charts. Recorded in Nashville with spare studio accompaniment, the album represents Van Zandt at his most concentrated: narrative songs of loss, wandering, and mortality delivered with the unnerving precision that made him the songwriter's songwriter. The self-deprecating title proved grimly prophetic — what Van Zandt intended as irony became the rubric under which his posthumous reputation was recovered and celebrated.
