The Lonesome Sound of Hank Williams

Hank Williams

Album · 1960

The Lonesome Sound of Hank Williams is a 1960 MGM Records album (E-3803) drawn from acetate recordings Williams made for the Louisiana Hayride radio program on KWKH in Shreveport. Williams died on January 1, 1953; MGM acquired the Hayride acetates in 1955 and overdubbed new Nashville session accompaniment onto the original performances for this and related posthumous releases. The result is an early entry in the long series of Williams compilations that have appeared since his death. His unadorned honky-tonk vocals — simultaneously raw and precise — remain compelling even beneath the added production, and the album stands as an important document of his radio work during the years when he transformed American country music and laid the foundation for bluegrass's commercial emergence.
