To Be His Child, released in 1987, documented the Nashville Bluegrass Band's deep commitment to sacred music. The group — formed around Steve Cooney, Pat Enright, Alan O'Bryant, Mark Hembree, and Mike Compton — had already established themselves as one of the most musically adventurous traditional bands to come out of Nashville, with an interest in African American gospel and rural sacred traditions that went beyond the standard country-church fare of most bluegrass gospel records. 'Gospel Plow,' a song rooted in the African American spiritual tradition, reflects that broader reach. Their gospel recordings reveal the spiritual seriousness that underlay their artistic ambition.
