Travelin' is a 1992 Rebel Records album (REB 1700) by Larry Sparks & the Lonesome Ramblers, featuring Carl Berggren on mandolin, Barry Crabtree on banjo, two fiddlers, and Dee Sparks — Larry's son — on bass. The dual-fiddle complement pairs Art Stamper — a veteran of the Stanley Brothers' recordings known for his spare, mournful mountain style — with the young Shawn Lane, giving the album an unusually rich tonal texture in which Stamper's deep Appalachian roots ground Lane's more contemporary approach. A mid-career Rebel recording, Travelin' documents Sparks maintaining the hard traditional sound he established after leaving Ralph Stanley's band in the early 1970s to found the Lonesome Ramblers — a commitment to the Virginia mountain bluegrass aesthetic he has never abandoned.
