Unit of Measure was released by Rounder Records (11661-0405-2) in November 2000, credited to the Tony Rice Unit. The studio tracks were recorded at Bias Recorders in Springfield, Virginia, on 24 and 25 November and 30 December 1996, with Bill Wolf recording and co-producing with Tony Rice. A track called “An Olde Irish Aire” was recorded by Rice at The Dungeon in Wentworth, North Carolina, in August 1999, and the closing “Sally Goodin,” at more than eight minutes the longest track, is a live recording made at Stewart Theatre at North Carolina State University in Raleigh in February 1993. The release credits note that all instruments on the record are acoustic.
Rice plays guitar, joined by his brother Wyatt Rice on guitar, Jimmy Gaudreau on mandolin, Rickie Simpkins on fiddle and Ronnie Simpkins on bass. The album is instrumental. The program includes “Jerusalem Ridge,” the fiddle tune Kenny Baker and Bill Monroe are credited with, “Gold Rush,” “Beaumont Rag,” Django Reinhardt’s “Swing 42,” “High Noon,” “House of the Rising Sun” and “Shenandoah.” Scott Alarik wrote the liner notes and Rice wrote the song notes.
