Waitin’ for the Sun to Shine

Ricky Skaggs

Album · 1981 · Epic FE 37193

Waitin' for the Sun to Shine, Ricky Skaggs's third studio album and his major-label debut on Epic Records in 1981, was the record that introduced the New South alumnus to a mainstream country audience and helped launch the neotraditionalist movement of the 1980s. Skaggs produced the album himself and played on every track; four singles charted, with Cryin' My Heart Out Over You and I Don't Care reaching number one and Don't Get Above Your Raisin' becoming the breakthrough single that established the bluegrass-leaning sound he would carry through the decade. The album went gold and peaked at number two on the country charts — a level of bluegrass-rooted commercial success Nashville had not seen in a generation.
