Walking Distance

John Mailander with Molly Tuttle

Album · 2014 · No label No #

Walking Distance is a self-released studio album from Molly Tuttle, the Palo Alto, California guitarist and vocalist who became one of the most acclaimed acoustic performers of her generation through her flatpicking technique, songwriting, and ensemble work, presented here in an early duo recording with Ryan Harris that documents her performing approach before her wider commercial breakthrough. Tuttle plays guitar and sings; Harris plays guitar and contributes additional instrumental work. The album presents original and traditional material in the intimate acoustic setting of two guitars, a format that allows Tuttle's flatpicking style — modeled in part on the Clarence White and Tony Rice approaches she absorbed from childhood — to be heard in the most direct possible context, without the ensemble elaboration that her later label recordings would add.
