When I Look Back (Hadley Music Group, HMG 1002) was released on 27 July 2007 and was Donna Ulisse’s first bluegrass album. Ulisse, who is from Hampton, Virginia, had made her debut on Atlantic Records in 1991 with the country album Trouble at the Door. Hadley’s Kathy Sacra-Anderson suggested she record her mountain songs, and Keith Sewell, who produced the fourteen-song collection (Discogs credits Ulisse as co-producer), also plays guitar. Rambles.NET noted that the songs are overwhelmingly Ulisse co-writes, written with her husband Marc Rossi, Claire Davidson and others.
The Bluegrass Discography places the sessions at House of David/Lake Fever Productions in Nashville. Scott Vestal plays banjo, Jesse Cobb mandolin, Andy Leftwich fiddle (and mandolin on several tracks), Randy Kohrs dobro and Byron House bass, with John Mock on penny whistle, concertina and harmonium. Curtis Wright sings backing vocals on the opening track, “I’m Calling Heaven Down”; Keith Sewell, Wendy Buckner Sewell, Rick Stanley, Carl Jackson and Larry Cordle sing backing vocals on others.
Ulisse released nine albums with Hadley between 2007 and 2015 and toured with her band, the Poor Mountain Boys.
