When It Rains is a solo album by Lou Reid. Sugar Hill issued it in 1991 as a CD (SH-CD-3788) and a cassette, and Bluegrass Unlimited reviewed it in January 1992. Reid was then the Seldom Scene’s lead singer and guitarist; he had replaced Phil Rosenthal in 1986, after earlier stints in Doyle Lawson and Quicksilver (from 1979) and the Ricky Skaggs Band (1982–86), and he left the Scene in 1992.
The twelve songs are played by a small group. Reid plays guitars, mandolin and fiddle, Tony Rice plays guitar, Terry Baucom banjo, Rickie Simpkins mandolin and fiddle, and Ronnie Simpkins bass. Baucom had been with Reid in Quicksilver. The vocals are shared the same way: Reid sings lead and harmony parts, Rickie Simpkins takes lead and high harmony on some, and Baucom sings harmony and bass. Among the titles are “Ain’t It Funny,” “Cry, Cry Darlin’,” “When It Rains,” “Mom’s Old Picture Book” and “Nobody’s Love Is Like Mine.”
The next year Reid formed his own band, Carolina, with Baucom and the bassist Marcus Smith; its second album, Carolina Moon, followed in 1994.
