You Could Have Called by Larry Sparks and the Lonesome Ramblers, released on Pine Tree in 1976, is a solid mid-career album from one of bluegrass's most durably distinctive voices. Sparks, who first came to wide attention as a guitarist and vocalist with the Stanley Brothers in the late 1960s, had developed a lead singing style that combined the high lonesome tradition with a warm, slightly rough-edged quality all his own. The Lonesome Ramblers were a hard-working, musically tight unit, and this album reflects their road-hardened assurance. Sparks's guitar work — clean, rhythmically strong flatpicking — is as important to the band's sound as his vocals, and both are well represented here.
