Terry Baucom
Contemporary Bluegrass
Terry Baucom, nicknamed “The Duke of Drive” for his propulsive right-hand attack, was one of the most influential bluegrass banjo players of his generation. A founding member of three landmark bands — Boone Creek, Doyle Lawson & Quicksilver, and IIIrd Tyme Out — he shaped the modern traditional sound for over four decades before leading his own group, the Dukes of Drive.
- Born October 6, 1952, in Monroe, North Carolina; took up banjo at age 10 after hearing Earl Scruggs on The Beverly Hillbillies.
- First professional job in 1970 with Charlie Moore and the Dixie Partners.
- Co-founded Boone Creek in 1975 with Ricky Skaggs and Jerry Douglas, an influential progressive-traditional outfit active through 1977.
- Founding banjoist of Doyle Lawson & Quicksilver in 1979, appearing on the band’s foundational Sugar Hill recordings.
- Original banjo player for IIIrd Tyme Out, playing on the band’s first two Rebel Records albums in 1991 and 1992.
- Launched Terry Baucom’s Dukes of Drive in the 2010s; his first solo album In a Groove featured Wyatt Rice, Barry Bales, Adam Steffey, and Jason Carter.
- “The Rock” (2015) topped the Bluegrass Today weekly chart as the most-played song on bluegrass radio.
- Inducted into the Blue Ridge Music Hall of Fame in 2015.
- Received the IBMA Distinguished Achievement Award in 2023, shortly before his death on December 7, 2023.
