The outlaw country movement of the early 1970s — Waylon Jennings, Willie Nelson, Kris Kristofferson, and the Texas songwriters around them — rejected Nashville’s slick studio sound for something rougher and more honest. Bluegrass picked up some of that material naturally. “Sad Songs and Waltzes” is the songwriter’s manifesto. “On the Road Again” became a Willie standard. “Tecumseh Valley” and “Devil in Disguise” sit comfortably between outlaw country and bluegrass.
