“Bluegrass Stomp,” sometimes titled “Blue Grass Stomp,” is a composition by Bill Monroe, the mandolinist and bandleader regarded as the founder of bluegrass. He first recorded it with his Blue Grass Boys in October 1949.
The tune is built as a twelve-bar blues in the key of D, with a melody that leans heavily on arpeggios outlining the chords. That structure has made it a standard of the bluegrass instrumental repertoire and a common piece for teaching arpeggio technique on the mandolin and fiddle.
This recording features the mandolinist Scott Napier and appears on his album “All Out Front,” a contemporary reading of one of Monroe’s early instrumentals.
