“Bugle Call Rag” is a jazz standard, written in 1922 by Jack Pettis, Billy Meyers, and Elmer Schoebel. The New Orleans Rhythm Kings made the first recording that year, and the tune’s hook is built on the “Assembly” bugle call.
A bright, swinging instrumental, the tune became a favorite of the big-band era through recordings by Benny Goodman and Glenn Miller. Its drive and its room for hot solos also drew bluegrass and acoustic players, who took it up as a swing number.
The tune crossed into the bluegrass world as a vehicle for fast, jazzy picking.
