“Ralph’s Banjo Special” is a banjo tune credited to Ralph Stanley. The Stanley Brothers recorded it in the late 1950s, reworking the older banjo number “Daybreak in Dixie” into a feature of their own.
A driving showcase for Stanley’s hard-edged, mountain-rooted banjo style, the tune put his distinctive playing front and center. It became one of the instrumentals associated with the Stanley sound.
The tune remains a favorite among banjo players.
