Chubby Anthony was a North Carolina-born fiddler whose teenage tenure with the Stanley Brothers in the mid-1950s, three Florida State Fiddle Championships, and his own band Big Timber made him one of the most respected workshop fiddlers of the second-generation bluegrass era.

  • Born Donald Lee Anthony on December 20, 1935 in Lincolnton, North Carolina; grew up near Cherryville.
  • Won the North Carolina state fiddling championship at age 12.
  • First joined the Stanley Brothers in 1953 at age 16; nicknamed "Chubby" by Carter Stanley during a 1955 radio broadcast.
  • Rehired by Carter Stanley in 1955 and worked with the Stanley Brothers on and off through 1961, with his first surfaced Stanley recordings dating to June 1956.
  • Sang baritone harmony in addition to playing fiddle, and was known for his fiddle workshops at festivals.
  • Worked with Charlie Moore's band on Asheville, NC television and later led his own group, Big Timber, formed in 1978.
  • Relocated to Florida and won the Florida State Fiddle Championship three times, becoming a fixture of Florida's bluegrass scene.
  • Died in Gainesville, Florida in 1980.
