The Legendary Stanley Brothers Recorded Live is a Rebel Records LP (SLP-1487), issued in 1970; a second volume followed as SLP-1495. Its twelve tracks come from audience recordings of Stanley Brothers shows, not from a professional live session, so the sound quality varies. The shows run from 1956 to 1962: Shipp’s Park in Morrisville, Virginia (8 July 1956), New River Ranch in Rising Sun, Maryland (September 1958 and May 1960), Antioch College in Yellow Springs, Ohio (14 May 1960), Glen Echo near Charlottesville, Virginia (4 March 1962) and the Ash Grove in Hollywood (30 and 31 August 1962).
Carter Stanley on guitar and Ralph Stanley on banjo are the constants; the band behind them changes with the date. “Roving Gambler,” from 1956, has Curley Lambert on mandolin, Chubby Anthony on fiddle and Lindy Clear on bass, with Carter singing lead and Ralph the tenor. At Glen Echo in 1962 George Shuffler plays second guitar with Chick Stripling on bass; at the Ash Grove, Vernon Derrick plays fiddle and Roger Bush bass. Charles R. Freeland and Fay McGinnis wrote the sleeve notes, and Walt Saunders took the cover photograph.
