“She Left Me Standing on the Mountain” is a song written by Alton Delmore and first recorded by the Delmore Brothers, the influential Alabama duo, in 1946.
The lyric is a heartbreak song with a vivid image at its center: a jilted lover left standing alone on a mountaintop, watching the one he loves walk away below. That picture of helpless, elevated loneliness gave a familiar lament an unusual sharpness.
The song passed from the Delmore Brothers’ close-harmony country into bluegrass.
