“Wrong Road Again” was written by Allen Reynolds, the Nashville songwriter and producer. Crystal Gayle recorded it in the mid-1970s, and it was one of her early country hits.
The song is a clear-eyed look at a bad romance. The singer knows that going back to a certain love means heading down the wrong road again, sees the mistake plainly, and yet feels the pull of it all the same. The hurt is in knowing better and going anyway.
The song crossed from country into bluegrass.
