“You Are My Flower” is credited to A. P. Carter, and the Carter Family recorded it for Decca.
The words are a message of cheer. The grass is as green and the sky as blue as ever, nature seems to be speaking to both of them, and the listener is the flower blooming in the mountains. The singer advises a happy smile and forgetting tears, and says that when summer is past and snow falls, one should simply sing this song.
Lester Flatt and Earl Scruggs recorded it on 10 February 1961 at the Bradley Film & Recording Studio in Nashville for Songs of the Famous Carter Family (Columbia, 1961), an album of Carter Family songs on which Maybelle Carter played autoharp; Flatt sang the lead. They cut it again on 27 November 1963 at the Columbia studio in Nashville with Billy Powers on guitar, Paul Warren on fiddle, Buck Graves on dobro and Jake Tullock on bass, and Columbia issued it on 7 January 1964 as the B-side of “My Saro Jane.”
