9 to 5 and Odd Jobs

Dolly Parton

Album · 1980

9 to 5 and Odd Jobs was released by RCA Victor (AHL1-3852) on 17 November 1980. It is built around the title song, which Parton wrote for the film 9 to 5, in which she appeared with Jane Fonda and Lily Tomlin, and which topped both the country and pop charts. The album spent ten weeks at number one on Billboard’s country albums chart and was certified gold. Mike Post produced and arranged most of it; the title track was produced by Parton’s bandleader Gregg Perry.

Several of the ten tracks are cover versions: Mike Settle’s “But You Know I Love You,” which also reached number one on the country chart; the traditional “The House of the Rising Sun”; Woody Guthrie and Martin Hoffman’s “Deportee (Plane Wreck at Los Gatos)”; Danny Dill and Mel Tillis’s “Detroit City”; and Merle Travis’s “Dark as a Dungeon.” Sonny Osborne plays banjo on every track except the title song, and Bobby and Sonny Osborne sing backing vocals on one of them. Other players credited include Reggie Young on guitar, Leland Sklar on bass, Eddie Bayers on drums and Joe McGuffee on steel guitar.
