A Mother's Prayer (Rebel REB-CD 1840, 2011) is a late-career gospel album from Ralph Stanley, recorded at Maggard Sound Studios in Big Stone Gap, Virginia. Stanley, then in his mid-eighties, described the record at the time as his final gospel project — though he continued performing until near the end of his life in 2016. The Clinch Mountain Boys lineup includes John Rigsby on tenor and mandolin, James Allen Shelton, Steve Sparkman, Jack Cooke on bass, Jacob Shelton, and Dewey Brown. The title track was composed by Ronnie Bowman of the Lonesome River Band. Stanley's worn, ancient-sounding voice lends the hymns and gospel pieces a gravitas that no studio treatment can manufacture, and the album is characteristic of his finest late-period Rebel work.
