A Touch of the Past (Pinecastle Records PRC 1022) is a studio album from Bobby Osborne and an ensemble of contemporary traditional performers presenting the bluegrass repertoire in the direct acoustic setting that Osborne's mandolin and distinctive high tenor had inhabited for more than four decades, with Alison Krauss joining as a featured guest vocalist. Bobby Osborne plays mandolin and sings; Alison Krauss plays fiddle and sings; Terry Eldredge plays guitar and sings; Alex Johnstone plays banjo; and Jessica Smith holds the bass. Pinecastle Records provided a home for Osborne's solo recordings in the years following his long partnership with Sonny Osborne, and Krauss's appearance connects two generations of bluegrass performance — Osborne's deep roots in the Hyden, Kentucky tradition and Krauss's position as the genre's most commercially successful contemporary figure.
