A Tribute to John Hartford: Live from Mountain Stage (Blue Plate Music BPM 405) was released on 10 July 2001, five weeks after Hartford died of non-Hodgkin lymphoma on 4 June. The recordings come from a tribute episode of the West Virginia Public Radio series Mountain Stage, taped at Nashville’s War Memorial Auditorium in late September 2000, Hartford’s ninth and last appearance on the show.

The first eight of the thirteen tracks are by other artists: Kathy Mattea and Tim O’Brien on Hartford’s “Gentle on My Mind,” Riders in the Sky on “Billy the Kid,” Norman Blake on the instrumental “Savannah Rag,” John Cowan on “Dark as a Dungeon” with Béla Fleck, Pat Flynn, Scott Vestal and Randy Kohrs, Jamie Hartford on “Who Cut Your Heart Out?,” Gillian Welch (with David Rawlings) on “In Tall Buildings,” Tim O’Brien on “More Love” and Béla Fleck on the instrumental “On the Road.” The last five are Hartford’s own. For four of them — “In the Heart of the Cross Eyed Child,” “Me and My Fiddle,” “The Boys from North Carolina” and “Watching the River Go By” — he is joined by Chris Sharp on guitar, Bob Carlin on banjo and Mike Compton on mandolin, among others. He plays fiddle and sings alone on the final track, “Give Me the Flowers While I’m Living.”
