A Tribute to the Delmore Brothers is a 1960 album released by the Louvin Brothers on Capitol Records (T-1449). Charlie Louvin (guitar, vocals) and Ira Louvin (mandolin, vocals) pay explicit homage to Alton and Rabon Delmore, whose close-harmony brother duet recordings of the 1930s and '40s were a formative influence on the Louvins' own style. The album reunites two of country music's great fraternal harmony traditions—the Delmores' smooth, jazzy inflections and the Louvins' more mountain-edged approach—in a program of Delmore compositions and associated material. By 1960 the Louvins were established Capitol artists, and the tribute project reflects their roots consciousness and gratitude toward a preceding generation of close-harmony pioneers.
