Across the Blueridge Mountains, released in 1983 on Folkways (FTS 31076), is the debut solo bluegrass album of Harley Allen, son of Red Allen of the Osborne Brothers and Allen Brothers fame. Red Allen produced the record, which was cut in two sessions — August 1982 at Vassar Clements's Nashville studio and October 1982 at Jewel Recording in Cincinnati — with a first-call lineup including J.D. Crowe on banjo, Vassar Clements on fiddle, and Josh Graves on Dobro alongside Allen's vocals and guitar. Harley Allen later moved deep into Nashville mainstream country and became a powerhouse songwriter with more than three hundred and fifty cuts, including the John Michael Montgomery number-one "The Little Girl." This record is the bluegrass origin of that arc.
