After Midnight, the Seldom Scene's 1981 release on Sugar Hill (SH-3721), is best remembered as one of the last albums to feature the original John Duffey-led lineup that had defined progressive bluegrass in the Washington, D.C. scene through the 1970s. The program reaches deliberately outside the bluegrass canon, with covers of J.J. Cale's After Midnight and Lay Down Sally (both songs identified with Eric Clapton) and Benny Goodman's swing standard Stompin' at the Savoy, all reworked into the Scene's signature crisp picking and high harmony. The album closed a chapter for the band; Duffey would carry on with new members through the 1980s and beyond, but the original Scene configuration would not record together for much longer.
