After the Sunrise (Rebel REB-1685) was issued in 1990 by Bill Harrell and the Virginians. Rebel Records described it as Harrell’s first all-gospel recording in more than a decade; his previous gospel album, Bluegrass Gospel, Pure and Simple, had come out on Leather in 1980. Harrell is credited on guitar with lead and tenor vocals, his son Mitch Harrell on guitar and vocals, Bobby Lundy on banjo and mandolin, Carl Nelson on fiddle, Dave Giegerich on dobro and Billy Budd on bass. Harrell produced it, with Peter Ellenda and Ronnie Freeland engineering and Gary B. Reid coordinating production for Rebel.
The twelve tracks include the title song, “The Old Rugged Cross,” “I’ll Be No Stranger There,” “Stairway of Gold,” “In the Garden” and “The Unclouded Day.” “The Angels Will Be Taking Care of You” is also the title of a song on his 1983 Rebel album Walking in the Early Morning Dew, which Rebel describes as a remembrance of his recently deceased wife.
Harrell was born in Marion, Virginia, in 1934 and died in Maryland in 2009. He formed the Virginians around 1960 and in 1966 joined Don Reno’s band, a partnership that lasted until early 1977, when he re-formed the Virginians with Carl Nelson on fiddle. From 1980 to 1998 he made eight new albums for Rebel.
