After the Sunrise cover

After the Sunrise, released on Rebel Records in 1990, is a gospel album from Bill Harrell, the veteran guitarist, vocalist, and bandleader who spent decades as one of the Washington, D.C.-area's most respected bluegrass figures, leading the Virginians across a long run of Rebel recordings. The album is performed with the Virginians ensemble — among them Billy Budd, the Lundy brothers, Carl Nelson, Mitch Harrell, Wayne Goodwin, and Dave Giegerich. Harrell's warm baritone and his commitment to the classic bluegrass vocal style defined his recordings across multiple decades, and After the Sunrise gathers the sacred side of that work into a single statement. Gospel has run as a continuous thread through bluegrass since its beginnings, and Harrell approached it with the same seriousness he brought to secular material — the record affirms a bandleader for whom both dimensions of the tradition were equally worth doing well.
